Its not bad luck mate but you've got to do your research with these bikes. I know this issue is covered under warranty but owning one of these and having a garage make all the decisions and do the work is a fast track to bankruptsy. Unless your planning on using the bike all through winter which will destroy the thing, you have time on your hands now. Do the research, buy a haynes manual, use this forum for advice and get that garage heater on. They may be sending the carrier and sprocket so you will be fine but just the outer ring sprocket on its own is no use to you. The carrier should have flats on the back to stop the cush drives backing out again. Thats the only real reason to use an aftermarket carrier. Obviously the sprockets are cheaper once you have the carrier but it all depends on how many miles your going to do. Personally i dont like the look of the extra ring of nuts, it all looks a bit cluttered to me, but thats being a bit picky I suppose. Haydn
If I'd had her 6 months I'd do it myself but it was only a day old to me so made sense to let a dealer sort it under Warranty. Although it's become very painful. Heaven knows what is being sent now so I will just have to see how it plays out. Either it gets fixed, or I send her back or I have to pay the extra for a new carrier. I will be doing most stuff myself except belts, cams and rockers. 1 kind member has already sent me a Haynes
Sorry to be the harbinger of doom but I reckon the garage have looked up the price of the cheapest 748 sprocket, found the JT one (without the required carrier) and, not knowing fuck all about the need for a JT carrier, think they have found a lovely cheap sprocket to sort you out. JT sprocket will turn up at OYB and they'll go: "can't deal with this on its own without a carrier, mate"...
On a positive note, they say the stand, bracket bolt holes in the engine are ok . Stand is a bit worn and slightly bent but no worse than a lot of others. Still getting a 1098 one for Christmas off my sister though. Not told her what they cost yet
Id ring bike shop that sold this bike to you and confirm the above. If the carrier doesn't arrive simply tell them enough is enough and demand a full refund and get them to collect the bike. If this was my bike id be face to face with them .First bike lets you down on day one due to cush drives (did they check anything what so ever before sale). Then the expensive ducati sprocket is fucked. You have also had to sort the sidestand out as bolts were loose. Not to mention hub is not in exactly new condition now after the cush drive milling it away. You have the patience of a saint compared to me lol.
They are 100 miles away which does not help. Not sure where I stand regarding a refund and what my rights are and how much I would get back after costs to OYB and reclaiming the bike. To be honest all I want is a motorcycle I can ride. Got a horrible feeling I will end up chatting to citizens advice and trading standards but I really don't want to. I don't think they knew this would happen, sometime nobody wins.
Considering the big picture view, the issues you have are quite minor so don't get too downhearted about it. If push comes to shove, it ain't worth returning the bike. Just bide your time, find quality second hand sprocket and or carrier and sort it at your leisure over the winter.
As said before is something is FAULTY it is not fit for purpose. Therefore legally you are entitled to a full refund in retail industry.Cant see motor trade being any different as its consumer rights. If you don't like something and return it then its up to shop if they offer a exchange of product or refund at there discretion which in reality means never. You will be offered A exchange or credit note. If that was my bike and I had just purchased it from a shop id take the refund option as soon as it let me down ie was faulty on day one.
If it was tucked up in my garage I could repair at my leisure but its in a Ducati dealers who won't want it kicking around for weeks and I can't get it back without putting on the back of a van and paying another £60. Really don't want a credit note. Who knows, when this is fixed I may have many years trouble free and it all works out peachy. As said, small issues, just a ball ache it was on day 1.
If I don't fit, and the original dealers think it will, I may just buy the bloody carrier. Alloy Sprocket Carrier JTA750B JT750B - Suitable for Ducati 748 (Biposto) 748 (Biposto) 748 (R) 748 (S) 748 (SP) M 800 (Monster S2R) 916 (Biposto) 916 (SP) 996 (Biposto) 996 (SPS) 998 (Biposto) 998 (Multi Strada) 998 (S) M 1000 (Monster S2R) 1078 (Multi Strada) 1078 (Multi Strada S) 1100 (Hypermotard) 1100 (Hypermotard S)
Read the above about FAULTY items. This is not a case of you returning it because you don't like it etc. However I would have done this same day I picked it up and broke down. Now you have agreed for bike to be fixed by third party im not so sure legally where you stand. Is it OE sprocket on it.Then its OE sprocket its replaced with.Simply saying we aint paying that doesn't cut the mustard with me. Tell them if they don't want to replace with OE ducati parts you will accept NCR items instead lol.Cheeky cunts.See how they like it.Actually id demand part be replaced like for like then put the extra out of my own money on Renthal,STM,Bucci etc carrier and sprocket. If a bike shop is not going to fix a FAULTY bike they sold with oe parts then why bother paying premium buying from a shop in the first place.Might a well take the risk ,save money and buy private.
I think the most the bike shop did, was to chuck a cold bucket of water of the bike prior to sale. Nothing more.
It's hardly a "lemon" . The bike has a few bit's that need attention that are very typical of the age, marque and model. As FE implies, I'd imagine the Bike Shop want a quick turn around and make some money on what I guess is a trade in? If you believe they are really going to carry out a 100000000000001 and 1 check, you're in cloud cuckoo land. Hopefully a basic safety check, but that would be it. Hopefully once these bits are sorted the bike will bring you years of motorcycling and minor tinkering.... From what I can tell the JT sprocket will need a carrier as I'm not sure JT do one that does not for the 996. JT Sprockets: Catalogue
Im surprised how well so many members take a sale of faulty goods in there stride especially when goods cost £1,000's. This bike sale is the same as the following- Imagine this. You come into my shop and buy a nice Saint Laurent Paris leather jacket that costs over £4,000.You decide to wear straight out the shop.By the time you get home the stitching on seams has opened up,item is clearly faulty. You want me to send item back to Saint Lauren Paris but I say " get it fixed locally and we will pay" as its a pain for me to collect it .On taking it locally to get it fixed you find there are more faults.Expensive faults at that so I say "im not paying that ill get my nan to send a fix instead" lmfao. At this point my customers would go ape shit and demand a full refund. In fact I bet my left testicle they would have demanded I pay for trackable return post at my cost on day one.I would have agreed immediately and apologised until the cows come home after refunding there money in full. I think im in the wrong game as selling motorbikes seems much easier.
It's not a brand new item. It's an old(er) motorbike, sold with a warranty which probably isn't worth the paper it's written on. TBH I'm surprised the bike shop is even getting involved and simply playing the 'wear and tear' or 'consumable' card. If you examine the warranties you're likely to find (even on new items) that the seller has the opportunity to make good the item. I went through a tonne of pain and misery over a phone some years ago! Unfortunately taking a motorbike or car, (new or old) back isn't as simple as returning a toaster to Argos.
George you are only 30 mins away, if OYB start messing around get the carrier and I can come over and fit it for you
Agreed motorbike is secondhand but cush drive failure is not wear and tear it was sold like that.Seems a sloppy way to sell used bikes if they don't even check them before sale.Ive also sold used designer good for £1000's and if they were faulty id do the same and offer full refund after I had inspected goods.Id also pay return costs for faulty stuff.Maybe I just offer good honest customer service. Oh well if you all find it acceptable good luck to you.Id have my money back within 24 hrs.Id ask politely first and if that got me no where id respond my way.I hope the OP comes to a satisfactory conclusion with shop and bike is fixed and up and running asap.Still pretty poor show for break down on day of purchase.
