Likley your wife’s email was compromised as one of the Expedia or linked in or talk talk or whichever hacks, and they sold on. They use as a base to generate email addresses around it, and send to all. Sometimes they blind copy everyone, sometimes not. Add to spam, the filters are pretty good these days, then check once a week to make sure there isn’t anything mistakenly placed there (eg you’ve signed up to a new service or email invoice from a retailer) the dump them all in one go. Can’t help in your virgin thing, sounds like a hardware/formware problem on the box to me.
