Valve Check 999

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Cream_Revenge, Oct 8, 2016.

  1. You're always gonna have a witness of oil when the cover comes off that's why I thought the horizontal one looked suspect too dry & dirty, there should be new sealant showing as well. Maybe they did just check the vertical as it's easy access if so it seems bad practice to me I certainly wouldn't be going back

  2. That's what I was thinking too. When my 996 was done I thought my oil cooler had sprung a leak but as a wise individual from here pointed out it could be from the valve adjustment. And it was.

  3. Pretty much yeah, you're not pulling the head off its just a cover, once off its easy access to the cams & rockers unlike the desmoquattro (996) where you need to be a gynaecologist to get in to measure things :)

  4. Good point

  5. 3k seems more like revving than idling to me. I start mine up without touching throttle or lever and leave it to literally idle till Ive backed it out of the drive and then drive away, fairly gently
Most wear allegedly happens st start-up.

  6. So has anyone seen the print worn off like this at all (forgetting the 100 miles)
It looks concerning to me :Wideyed:

  7. That's what I used to do....

  8. I seriously doubt any excessive wear is occurring in those first 10 seconds, the levers there for a reason and I tend to trust the boys from Bologna

  9. I've never seen it before, looks suspect to me too

  10. I'm starting to think that harder starting cold needing a little cold start lever and perfect starting warm is probably a good thing though?

Can't get my head round why its changed though, must be a valve clearances thing.

  11. The function of the 'Cold start thing' is just to open up the Throttle butterfly's by a few mm. Effectively mimicking you just opening the Throttle by a few degrees. It's not a 'Choke' as some people think!
If you ever have the airbox lid off you can observe how it works.

  12. Garage has replied, to be fair it makes sense to my little brain:
"I would always use the cold start lever when starting as it is meant to be used for this reason especially if the engine is below 30 degrees , most big twins will be a problem to start when you don’t use the correct procedure.

We will have reset all the idle values on a hot engine as they are meant to be so when it is cold it will need the cold start to start normally.

The bike is running very rich however as the dyno showed and would help massively with a remap."

  13. What I don't understand is how you were only charged £216 ( presumably VAT included) which includes new belts, oil, valve check, dyno run and plug in to their diagnostic equipment.
It takes several hours to just check the valve clearances properly!
Dealers normally charge in the region of £130 just for the belts without the fitting.
    I smell a rat!

  14. They mucked up. They got mixed up and did a normal service of belts, oil, oil filter and spark plugs, new brake/clutch fluid and job done, bike put together and put to one side.
Once the paperwork went upstairs and I called to check on it and asked how the valves were their mistake came to light. So it went back down again and they did the valves, i've been told today "1 front 2 rears exhaust" were adjusted. As I didn't ask for the other bits they have taken this on the chin and did not try to charge me for them. So it's £216 for 3 valves adjusted. They didn't charge for the dyno run, i did ask as I thought £216 was low but they told me not to worry and threw it in for free.

  15. Who is it?

  16. Leaving aside the doubt about the markings on the belts, it does seem you have had a result then.

Couple of years ago I had a bill for £720 for checking and adjusting valves, which as it transpired, they hadn't done properly, and I had to return bike to rectify!
