916 Varese Bikes - I Just Don't Get It - But I'm Coming Around

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by West Cork Paul, Jun 19, 2020.

  1. @Powerful Pierre Wow - just Wow  and welcome to the Forum :upyeah: and thank you for joining in this thread.

That is a beautiful bike in immaculate condition and the fact you have all the original parts and are the original owner plus the fact it's year 1 production makes that a very hard bike to value IMO as it's probably irreplaceable.

Have no fear Harry, Pierre will make the swap, I mean who would want a bike that was irreplaceable, much better to have one that's replaceable IMO.

  5. Yeah, that's where I am at the moment.....was talking to John Hackett about it this morning trying to get a handle on it and he's of a similar opinion - its the provenance that makes it as much as condition so its really how much someone would be prepared to pay......not that its for sale, sorry Harry, deals off!
I've seen the one in the factory museum, and honestly, without being a smartarse, I thought 'I think mines better than that!'.

  6. You'll regret this one day, but I'm a fair guy and happy to let you mull it over for a while :D

Seriously, stunning bike - keep it but keep riding it :upyeah:

  8. Nice .... original owner will add to the value. I also remember seeing the first one at the NEC, couldn’t get near the thing. John had one for sale when I sold mine, might have been his, I can’t remember.

Mine was the same, just had three owners .... starting to wish I’d never sold it ☹️

  9. Yes, he did say he'd sold his Strada a couple of years ago - nice guy, very helpful and good to get the opinion of someone who deals with these bikes rather than floundering around in the dark.
And I know what you mean about keeping bikes - I have kept a few but there's certainly others I wish I'd kept.
    Yours looked tasty!

  10. As I understand it the current 916 air tubes from Ducati come in light grey primer which needs painting satin black to match the original finish on the original air tubes.

  11. That is in stunning condition for any 26 year old motorcycle, the lack of stone chips on the front mudguard makes me think they must hoover the roads round your way. And that engine paint, particularly on the crank case behind the rear cylinder is in superb condition. That bike is a credit to you, nice one!

  12. E7B5A17A-CB1C-4493-95DC-6AAF4A8E17F4.jpeg Hello, new member here... I’m another 94 Strada crawling out of the woodwork! Interesting thread... I bought my ‘94 916 twenty-two years ago, it was a dream come true at the time (and my house deposit!). The frame number is 1327, first registered in the UK August 1994. It was 100% original when I bought it and I have all parts apart from those screen and fairing rivets (I have a few left), but I replaced them with ‘better’ fixings after they started to fall out. I am now trying to source replacements. Any ideas welcome (hens teeth I know), I’ve seen the similar Suzuki items, but the colours are wrong.

The bike currently has Sil Moto pipes and a JHP eeprom and a carbon v piece, but I have everything to put back to standard, including the rubber front brake lines! The Agip stickers were on it when I bought it and I guess should go.

I really have no idea about value and I have no intention of selling. I too hope my 5 year old son will one day inherit my bike! Not the best pic, sorry, but you know what they look like... Cheers, Shane

  14. Lovely!! Hello buy the way :upyeah:

  15. Nah, we've got the same potholes as everybody else but I guess the nuts/tank interface you get on a 916 soon teaches you to avoid them at all costs.....
Its been properly used, but not so much nowadays....its taken me to the Nürburgring, toured around Scotland etc....well I say 'toured' - I think it was a case of the grey blurs being the towns and the green blurs being the countryside! A few times I rode it 400 miles+ in a day with no issues, even the fuel range was half decent.
A few years back I got a last minute invite to ride Donington Park as a guest of a guy I knew that had a hospitality suite there - that was when I properly realised just what a piece of work the 916 was, and still is....its only on the track that you realise just what the bike is really all about, going fast on the road is fun, or was pre traffic density/cameras, but to really explore what it could do blew my mind! I was getting close to selling it at the time because it wasn't getting used much but after that experience there was no way, I was still bouncing a fortnight later!
Sounds sentimental but its those sort of memories that will tie me to the bike forever.

  16. Nice one, its good to know that there's a few that have survived pretty much unscathed.
There's a guy I met who I think comes on here, I though I saw some posts from him when I was trawling around the other day - Tim Keay. He had some of those rivets made to match the originals so if you can track him down he might be able to help.
Mines got the Agip stickers on too and I'm very wary of taking them off in case they bring the paint with it....anyway, they're 'of its time' so they don't look amiss IMHO.

  17. Many thanks. I bought it from a friend originally and it was his wife’s bike... she had bought it in ‘96 hoping it would be more comfy to ride the her previous 888 SP5! Long time ago now... I used to commute on it back in the day!
Many thanks for the tip. I’ll do some digging. As a long term owner, there’s a certain irony in replacing all the carbon and anodised bolts with the ‘cheap’ plastic and mild steel originals (that I luckily retained)... but those fasteners really wasn’t fit for purpose on a vibrating twin! Interesting about the Agip stickers... Your bike looks in amazing condition by the way! Just beautiful... my cases are quite flakey in comparison.

  19. That's the very fella!

Nice guy, a proper mine of info on the 916 and got a stash of parts too, or he certainly did have last time I spoke to him.

  20. Is it just me or is a 916 with its clothes off motorcycle porn??
