Vin Decode

Discussion in 'Other Bikes' started by Snips, Oct 7, 2021.

  1. This isn't Ducati specific, but you're a knowledgeable bunch so here goes...

I am looking to buy a new Speed Triple 1200 RS, but I want to get one next year, and to be sure I get the Model Year 2022.

I noted a VIN of a new bike in the showroom today, and the VIN is SMTS3P01SCNAG4034

    So, that's

    SMT - Triumph

    S3P01S - Speed Triple 1200 RS

    C - Model Year, which decodes to 2012 (!)

    N - Plant Code

    AG4034 - Serial number

What confuses me, is that, according to numerous decoders, the 'C' model year, decodes to either 1982 or 2012 (can be either apparently). Neither of which are 2021, which is what I would expect.

Can someone tell me why the Model Year decodes to 2012, and is not 2021 (+/- 1) ?
