  3. I’m reading some old school sf at the moment - The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury. Thoroughly enjoying it, too.

  4. Good stuff right there.

as long as I am here. If you like Sword and Sorcery like Lord of the rings check this out.
That was my genre for a long time. This, and the following series was the best I have read.

Not sure if there are spoilers there.
If you have kids, turn them onto this. Very entertaining and always an easy read.

For years fans could write in their own things and he worked them in. Everyone is Magic. But not everyone is a Wizard.
need shoes? find a Shoe Tree.
I normally would not recomend a series that didnt have them all written. As I read fast and have been burned when in love with a series but it was not finished. That will NOT be a problem here

  8. The Draughtsman by Robert Lautner.

Very thought provoking, about a newly hired junior at a Design company during WW2, the company just happens to have got the contract for designing and building some large Industrial Ovens.

  9. I read the Belgariad series some years ago. started off loving them but by the end I found the characters a bit shallow and irritating. Not the worst thing I've ever read by a long shot, and I'm sure others would enjoy the yarn, so I'd still recommend them as well.

I've heard of Piers Anthony and the Xanth books but not ready any. There sure are a lot lot of them! I'll add it to my list so I don't forget. Right now I've got over 50 books waiting to be read on the shelf so I'm trying not to buy any more for a while.

Once I've finished up with Bradbury I'm going to pick up a Guy Gavriel Kay novel. I've been a fan of his sine The Summer Tree. Worth trying if you haven't already.

I'm with you on the unfinished series problem. I'm starting to worry whether George RR Martin will ever finish the Game of Thrones series. He's not a young man!

  10. The Secret Barrister: Stories of the Law and How It's Broken. Written by a criminal barrister about the UK criminal justice system. Fascinating read if this is your bag. Whilst I am a lawyer, I'm not a criminal law specialist so a lot of this is eye-opening for me. It gives what I think is a pretty balanced view of the system, warts and all.

  11. Finally finished the Magus / Foulks.

After all the twists & turns of a labyrinth the ending was decidedly poor. Lots of dead superfluous information and even characters that were of no value - Jojo? Disappointing. Though the book does have its fans so perhaps I'm missing something...

  14. Finished with The Martian Chronicles the other day. Writing styles have changed since the 1950's and of course the science has altered our understanding of Mars radically but that didn't detract from the enjoyment of the stories as they examined different aspects of the human condition as they colonize the red planet.

Now going back to one from the Kay section of my unread shelves. Fantasy with a French twist.
