Which Laptop?

  1. Just to add older lenovo laptops are pretty good but drivers on their site can be a pain... Very Linux friendly.

I'll extend my offer to chiz.... Whatever you get if you get a second hander get it to me and I'll build it for you.

  2. I bloke i once worked with had a Sony Vaio with a screen fault. I said, "How did that happen? Why don't you get it fixed?" and he said "That's the third one I've had that has done that." So I simply thought, why do you keep buying them then?
It was also a bugger to access my wifi. My Mac will access any wifi without a qualm and it's 8 or 9 years old.

  3. Yes but your mac probably has end of life on the OS.... We have an old mac pro 1.1 which will not run the last 3 versions of their OS...

  4. That is true for Windows but the time frame is a lot longer.

And no... I wouldn't buy a vaio either their support is awful.

  5. An it pro told me he always goes for s/h IBM Thinkpads as they are pretty much bullet proof

  6. Think pads are a good option.... Not as many second hand spares as Dell though I would say.

  7. You're not entirely wrong. It won't run the latest version of the OS because the greedy Apple think I have had quite enough use out of it and that it is high time I bought another one. But their ruse will fail for another couple of years as it will run (and is running) the penultimate OS, OS X 10.11 El Capitán. You don't need the latest OS which only came out in October, although they are trying to make life uncomfortable. I got sent a Numbers spreadsheet a week ago which I couldn't open because I don't have the latest version of Numbers, only the penultimate version. You can only get the latest version with the latest OS. Thanks Apple! They were the bastards who sent me the spreadsheet...

Still, in this game, having an 8 year old fully functioning computer, which I use all day every day, is a result. And with its SSD (I upgraded) and its 8 Gb of RAM, it's still plenty fast and hassle free. You can't get bits for it of course, as Apple don't support anything after 5 years... But then I have access to all sorts of bits from junked computers if necessary. Got a free battery a fortnight ago - in much better nick than mine.

At least it isn't made of plastic cheese.

  8. You can hack the efi support file and force it on... We did... We're trying to get the latest version of X code on there... Bit flaky though...

  9. If you merely want to tidy your office up, I'll sweep it away for you -neat and tidy then....

  10. Something up with the main board.... No matter what we do it runs like treacle.... Even when we put an ssd in.... Weird...

  11. Love my ProBook. Spilt 50% of a cup of coffee in it a few months back. Power off, battery out, strip, dry, reassemble, carry on as you were. Proper solid bit of kit.

  12. I've found pro books to be ill equipped internally.... Not enough internal ports no spare antennas, only 2 memory slots. Equivalent precision are equipped with all of those plus 3 HD bays.

not to sound ungrateful! I just want a link to a site with a good value for money computer that at lest a few can agree will not be a piece of shit! Lol... It's fun though...

Won't be offended with whatever you choose to do... After all you'll be the one using it! [emoji1]

  19. All good stiff everyone, but what Chiz really needs to know is how well the casing will stand up to bread burning temperatures for his post pub forum surfing and cooking stints. Please give fire times in minutes to make an even playing field.
E.g. Toshiba Toughbook 60 minutes at 500°C, (or dark brown on white bread).
