The thing about training is that you don’t know what you don’t know until somebody tells you. I did a Rapid training course last year with an ex plod advanced instructor who still does surveillance work, I thought I had road riding pretty well sussed after 40 years (including off roading, trackdays CSS etc) , it turned out that some fairly minor tweeks led to some pretty impressive improvements in speed and observation. It was worth every penny of the not inconsiderable sum.
Judging what everyone else doesn't know, until they're told, sounds like typical plod instructor mentality to me.
It was 1984. I think it may have been an Escort panda car. I got away more than I ever got caught. Even on a lammy. At one stage the plod would just camp down the end of my road waiting for me. I think they enjoyed the chase more than I did.
. you have just reminded me of when I had plod waiting outside my house regularly. Never stopped for speeding then. Never got caught. But once in a while they would wait for me to get home. Were always damned decent, and were dispatched by the station sergeant to give me a rollicking, we would laugh and they would then go.
I did one of their skills days. Did the brake test and stopped quicker than anyone else by a fair margin. The trainer bloke went ape shit across the car park that I’d “one finger braked and it wasn’t safe. Nobody should be doing that as you can’t stop properly”. Interesting statement
Taking the institute of advanced Motorcyclists test 3pm today. Yes it is well worth it, has developed a safe and systematic approach to riding. Also I am riding faster with more confidence in my bike and myself. £140 well spent.
I aint wearing no hiviz vest man. Nor am I going to ride a BMW GS with panniers or an effin Honda pan. Nor am I going to witter on about cask ale or vote tory. I do my own thing. If I die, so be it. I'll be honest, Ive met too many condescending and patronising daily mail types as IAM peeps. I'm sure the majority are not at all like that. But, for some reason I seem to meet the ones that are. We had one here at work, he was a tit. With his bike of many lights and hi viz yfronts. Like a vegan his first words were Im an IAM instructor. He'd boast he had enough tools on him to strip his bike if it broke down. I said I just bought a reliable bike instead that wasnt a peice of junk masquarading as a fucking xmas tree. I think the point Im trying to make badly is the IAM may have an image and PR problem to some motorcyclists. It might just be me though as I am a contrary dickhead. Im also a pisstaking nob who doesnt take life too seriously. I dont like being told what to do either. Ye, its me.
