Wiring issue! What have I done!! Please help!!

  1. On the 749, isn't there a thin earth wire that goes to the ECU? Has that been disconnected/reconnected?

  2. The earth is easy to disturb if you dont know what your undoing. Below the battery on the battery tray there are two dome top allen bolts about 5cm apart. These bolts retain the ECU and go through the locating holes in the ECU and have a nut securing them and the ECU earth on the inside. Tou can see this if you take the heat shield off.

If you have undone these bolts you cant tighten them again without getting a spanner on the nut to the inside to tighten against the ECU.

2 min job but a good idea to check this.

I hope this isnt the case as shorting to the ECU is a sure fire way to an expensive bill.

  3. Right guys, thank you all for jumping on board with some ideas to what it could be - when I check for an error code it comes up with EF1, going to hit Google now and see what it means. Now the clicking seems to be coming from the left side, but if I physically stop the right fan from spinning the clicking stops and there is just a small humming?? Now as far as I am aware no relays were changed, I only touched the battery cables and they are all the right way

  4. Sorry! The codes are 37.3 Immobiliser (serial cable disconnected) and 38.0??

  5. 38.0 is can line. Sounds to me like you may have an issue with the security system and something needs to be reprogrammed.

  6. Thats a bitch mate. I am an electrician and that does not sound like a short. Thats the good news and about all I can do to help you.

    Regards Steve

  7. Which is nice, it may not be something horrific then! Would that explain the fan? 'can line's being? And how can a reset the security system? Or remove it?

  8. That's a very loud clicking noise, or does it just sound very loud because you have positioned your microphone very close to the source of the noise.

You mention that the noise appears to come from the l.h.s, can you be more specific and attempt to pin point the source ?

Not a good idea to stop the fan with your fingers!

What happens to the noise if you disconnect the r.h.s fan ( very simple , just disconnect the connector a few inches away from the fan)?

  9. It is louder because I am in the garage I guess, when I went to take the battery out I found the earth cable had broken at the end - whether it has been like this constantly or just when I went to remove it though I am not too sure! I need to get another (or improvise it)

  10. Hopefully you have found the cause of the problem. Wether or not it has 'been like this constantly, or just when you went to remove it'- the cable needs attention!

  11. Agreed! Going to see if I can get another cable sent ASAP.

  12. Can you not remove the cable and get another terminal fixed on?

presuming of course that the problem is where the cable joins into the terminal!

  13. you can get a new earth strap cable from halfords if you know the length.

you may even be able to pick up a crimping tool and terminal.

  14. I am going to stop off at Halford today - I will let you know how I get on!

  15. best bet is to look on their web first as you can check stock and know what you are after. staff tend to be worse than shite.

  16. Another idea is to visit an electrical contractor/wholesalers. You might be able to buy a new terminal from them, and if you play your cards right, ask them to crimp the new terminal onto the cable ( for a drink)

  17. Good news then and hopefully just a routine repair to the earth.

  18. Right, been to halfrauds, got me some new cables, and ready to hopefully get this sorted... So just so you guys know what I have done, here is a few pics of the set up - coming from the battery originally there was a big cable leading to the starter motor, and a number of different ancillaries cables (from both the positive and negative), so I cut the bigger ones off, and then connected the new cables like so...

Could this cause any issues? This for me was the only way it made sense without making up pretty much a new loom! So negative goes to the block, positive to this thing...

Then on to the starter motor, nothing else was touched (nothing electrical anyways, I did the R6 throttle mod and stuck on a few carbon bits at the same time)

The battery was out for a while, now how may this have affected the security devices and how can these be reset? I am doing a big European tour on this thing for charity in a few months, so really need it up and running well!!!

  19. I should just go for it JL - without sounding patronising you must be capable of cloning what was already there? Some alarms need a reset when disturbed by battery disconnection (and probably as an added security measure) but you will soon know when you try to start it normally.

  20. Ok JLC is your bike on your property i.e in your garage or down the shed, if it is do you leave the key in it ,and have you left the key in it whilst you've carried out all this wiring work, or even left the key next to the bike whilst you've been doing this.
The reason I ask is that it with you saying its an emobiliser code this could be the problem.
Take the key from the bike/vacinity of the bike for at least half an hour then try again. Not sure how far away it needs to be to not be picked up by the immobiliser signal but ,this has worked for me on an 02 fireblade which had inadvertantly had the charger connected to the wrong terminals for a full 6HRS
