So had some hot running at idle and started to smell an odd curry smell. Then had some odd high low rev.idle/slow throttle rolloff when throttle grip closed when hot so was looking into that mid ride and then proper started to lose coolant. Limped home after letting when cool off and. Looks the thermostat has let go and punched the pin from the valve through the housing and Into the throttle body base plate. (Can't see if it's cracked or punctured that yet) Bike has been running lovely and I do give it some on fast b roads (never under 5k only get 70 mile range and burn a set of tyre sin under 3k miles. I also do about 10k+ miles a year) self service every 3k miles so she is cared for Not sure how on earth did that happen. Just one of those things? Need to fix this so I can look into the throttle issue. Can see in a reference image the thermostat valve
Not alone. Has been reported on forum previously https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threa...-anyone-seen-anything-like-this-before.72819/
i think replacement with O.E.M. Part No 55320122A was said to be the answer when failures first occurred although it doesn't look a lot different around the problem area. Not sure warranty-wise in UK but worth a try depending on dealer, mileage etc.
If it's a known issue then there should be some dealer / mfr goodwill in place even if out of warranty - especially if a technical bulletin has been issued by Ducati. However... if that bike hasn't seen a main dealer in some time and skipped a few main dealer services, that's all they'd need to throw any good will out of the window if they wanted to be belligerent.
Cheers chaps I have the upgraded #22A one coming. Luckily it wasn't overheating as it ran fine and just got moany in traffic but it's always done that. Think it dumped most of coolant out at the end of my rise when I stopped to check it, but I think it actually went a few rides back as saw some odd dry fluid marks on rear tyre. I drained the system from bleed screw with the cap off and out of the 2.3 litres I got 700ml out !!! How it didn't cook itself I don't know. Was running smooth (as much as a 1299 does) That was a beeeeatch to get out . Although checking water level on refill looks to be more of a pain with the stupid sight window.
Do, please, post a photo of the new part when you get it, just so we may see what it should look like without having exploded. TIA
post #3 shows the replacement item (55320122A), and went out of my way to find a view that shows the "pivot" dimple (yellow) as this area obscured on nearly all listings.
Aha, I see it now, far left, thanks . I’ve 2x 899 here at present, one is the subject of another thread on here (link) and after the timely commencement of this thread a visual check ensued and sure enough the pivot pin is protruding about 5mm out of the plastic casing. The other one, which was collected at the weekend as the owner reports it’s overheating, appears to be intact, albeit it looks slightly different to the photos of either the original or superseded version as it appears to have a solid metal cap where the yellow paint is on your photo (post #3). However, it’s hard to see it clearly, and impossible to get a photo, whilst it’s in situ, unless one removes the LHS electrical component tray, a job it’s not worth doing on the first one as the engine is fubar’d on that one now and I’ve not yet got around to it on the 2nd one, that’s today’s job. Perhaps it’s an age thing, 10 year old plastic having gone through thousands of heat cycles, weakens and becomes brittle. It’s definitely worth owners checking theirs frequently.
No part numbers on them that I could see on the part and both look the same and have the pivot dimple which I guess is to strength the touch point (doesn't seem to have worked if my old housing had the dimple) I wonder if this was changed once before as lots of the hose clamps were jubilee not the single use clip ones that I was expecting. If so then this wouldn't be a great upgraded part if it still.fails. Got it all in pretty easily (relative term on a Ducati) have filled her up with 1.8 litres before it came out overflow and squeezed pipes etc. Adjusted expansion tank level and ran it for a bit anf no change in the level. Thinking I probably didn't get all old 2.3 litres out. As will be bits trapped in engine and drain plug is not at bottom of rad so happy that that much went in, Nothing leaking so will try and find time to ride and recheck.
