This has caught my eye.....wasn’t sure about the fairings at first but they’re growing on me https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/263379359938
Paint schemes will always divide opinions... As long as you like it and are happy with it, thats all that matter though! Looks like there are a couple of gaps in the service history following the 600mile 'running in service' which I suspect you may find where complete but the book wasn't stamped and invoice no longer with the bike... I would be querying this to satisfy myself all is good here, and also to find out who has been servicing it recently. Service history is very important, you don't want something that hasn't been cared for and corners cut in this department! Also, if you are buying it with any thought to residual values in the future you may want to see if there are any original bits that come with it. If the 1198's continue to hold strong value wise or even begin appreciating at all, service history and originality of the bike become most important when you come to sell... Ad also mentions that the seller has found his next bike which screams there is a deal to be had so if it all checks out, use this to your advantage
Just skimming through this thread....the usual constant is people selling on ebay only to relist them due to assholes, which must be frustrating. While i accept that a service history is a nice to have. For me, as long as i can see a steady stream of receipts for stuff bought for a bike (and working carried out) and the owner is competant then id say thats also acceptable. Ie one of my bikes has not seen the inside of a bike shops garage since the initial 600 mile service but, ive got a mountain of receipts for it and while doing upgrades and servicing everything has been addressed that needs to be...but, it will eventually see an official service at the point the valves need checking...everything else i can do. As long as the MOT's tally up on the mileage so it life is documented, thatd be enough for me. Generally im in the older is better camp....id like the new stuff and its nice to see it all evolving but, theres something about the old stuff that i love.
Trouble is, that’s what will devalue your bikes. Upgrades are great but service history better for most buyers.
@bradders D'y'know i was thinking when i posted that statement..... "Bradders'll be along to disagree with me soon...."
Not disagree matey, it’s just fact. If I bought a bike of yours it wouldn’t bother me, but I’ve read how meticulous you are with them when doing your own and that you use a specialist when needed. If I didn’t, I’d be naturally mis-trusting of home serviced bikes and simply apply a value against the price. And I think that applies to 90% plus of buyers. Would you pay full whack in s bike that some fella says he serviced fit the lady 4 years with just a few oil filter receipts?
Yeah - i do agree with you but, as youve just said id question someone that had a bike for a given length of time (say 4 years) with a few oil filter receipts....if saw oil filter receipts, brake pads, tyre receipts, brake fluid, oil (and not shit stuff), filters, air filters, spark plugs, MOT's, Maybe a chain set or 2 etc etc.....none of that being bling and, if the bikes service schedule say for example in that time needed valve clearances then id expect to see a sheet for the clearances or, a garage receipt for it. If all of that was for the same bike then id have no problem. Back at the start of the thread, everyone questioned the 11k bike and that had everything...so, y'cant really win (the seller that is) its just what the buyer wants to pay... Keep em coming Bradders - you keep me on my toes...! you going to the italian day again this year in Bristol....be nice to catch up...
Quite interesting debate. I think if the bike was off here or another related forum where owners (most!) clearly take care of their bikes and did their own servicing I’d be happy with that. But if from the bay etc - I’d rather dealer history.
I think that bike at 11k has been a track bike all it’s life so that puts me off a little bit! Especially at that money. Would rather spend another grand and get a 1299....
Full service histories are all very well IF the scheduled work has actually been done! Recently bought a 10 year old bike with full dealer(s) history, only to find it still has the original fuel filter in it! Not casting aspersions on the dealer network but it's certainly not the first FSH bike I've bought only to find items not done that should have been!
Now this has caught my attention: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/182965112960 Torn. So torn.
There's something not quite right with this bike. The wheels are the wrong shade of gold, the decals are the wrong font and it's too cheap for a bonafide R.
I thought there was something not quite right about the decals, started looking at other R photo's but couldn't decide what it was.
Hmmm - yeah I do my fuel filter every time I do the oil change - Rich at Louigi advised that I do....
Well, you could take the angle that a track bike gets everything but everything it needs, including regular engine strips...
