Reg/rect Upgrade + Liion Battery ?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Air Duck, Sep 23, 2017.

  1. I cannot believe that so many companies sell Lithium batteries and Ducati even fit them if they are so dangerous. There also seem to be many people, including me, who have them with no problems at all.
The trouble is that if just a couple of people have problems with them then they make loads of noise whereas the thousands with no problem keep quiet, and then it seems that they are dangerous.
Even lead acid batteries do not like being overcharged and all sorts of things can happen.

  2. Yeah I'm not going back to a lead/acid battery for any reason, I'd rather upgrade whatever is required to make it all function well together, I've also had no problems in the over three years I've been using them on Ducatis and will continue to do so.

Main problem I see at the moment is that the older stock regulator isn't a very good one! Panigale's now come with what looks like the Shendingen regulator too so...

  3. Same here. Not going back to lead acid. Putting away a storage charged battery and taking it off the shelf a year later at the practically the same state of charge is huge bonus. Haven't used battery tender for years. Bloody things!
Been using LiFe batteries for years and never had a dangerous problem. I've not kept count but at a guess I probably made about 2 dozen packs of various configurations. Careful cell selection and matching and only using genuine A123 cells makes a huge difference.

  4. blows bulbs?>is the symptom of high volts, can damage batteries to

  5. I don't have any bulbs to blow

  6. Do you build 13.2V packs with them? I was wondering how you package them too?
If you've got any photos of different shaped packs you've built it would be good to see them :upyeah:

  7. @Air Duck what bike are fitting it to? Just asking cause mine will be due a new battery this winter (998)

  8. Into my 1198 loom initially (got a bunch of repairs after last week's crash) and then if that's all good I'll put it on the 999s (same as your 998) and the SSs.

  9. Yes, most common one is 4 cells in series and usually 2 in parallel, so 8 cells. Mostly arranged in 2 rows of 4 upright cells. It tends to fit best and it fits the ali battery tray we've made, too. For packaging, I usually use large enough heatshrink tube. The pack without packaging measures 112w x 68h x 52d.

  10. Thanks that's useful. Heatshrink - that's a neat idea :upyeah:

  11. Yes thanks, I agree it's got to be worthwhile. Should be able to find somewhere to stick something like this out of the way but visible, kinda no-brainer for a fiver:

  12. Happy Bonfire Night to yer!

  13. Really busy right now... I will find the links.

The issue is that regulators (of which there are many types) tend to get a great deal hotter when run with the Lithium cells.
Given the location of said regulators the extra heat can cause a multitude of issues on some machines.
A user on here had a fire on a top recent Ducati for that very reason.
The issue is that the card carrying electronics engineer that designed that circuit never expected to have a Lithium cell at the end and therefore did not take account of that in his engineering calculations that would have been peer reviewed and signed off.
Yes I fully accept that some (many of you won't see a problem), but so long as you are aware of the issues (of which many on here are) then my job is done.
Check the temperature of the regulator once the Lithium cells are fully charged. If you can hold your hand on it.... then all is well, if it burns consider some of the excellent advice given by others on here.

  14. BobT what part of my post are you disagreeing with?

  15. I'm not abhorrent to the technology... I love it.
Heat, Heat and Heat. Our Ducati regulators hate it after a certain point and normally there are in terribly hot places already on Dukes.
A correctly designed circuit with Lithium cells is ideal for 99% of us on here.
Light weight, high current to start those huge V twins... what is there not to like?

If I can find the old threads I'll post them.. later.

  16. Can't understand why you think that the thousands using this tech are going to have bonfires. You don't have to use one if you don't want, but your opinions are being aimed at people who have had no problems. My battery is made by Magneti Marelli and they seem to be selling thousands with no lawsuits from owners whose bikes have caught fire. I think I would tend to trust that more than some blokes opinion on the internet.
Reminds me a bit of the Jehovah's Witnesses ramming their opinions at others.

  17. Fair enough.... my lemming friend.
I really need to learn, people don't like facts that run counter to what it is they have decided to do. The more facts you throw, the more they dislike you.

I have actually tried to put meat on the bones, as I have done it the numerous other threads on the exact same subject. We really need a decent tagging system on this forum.
You still didn't answer my question. What part of my post that you disagreed with, did you actually disagree with? It contains a few facts, which fact are you contesting, just so I can provide my justification.

  18. We know of bikes setting alight.
We know the manufacturer of a better quality Reg/Rec states not to use due to this reason.
He has links showing Ducati's that have set alight including a Paul Smart.
We know there is a real risk, this is based on fact.
You take advice or you ignore it - simple.

But don't try and say it is bollocks.

Bob T: back at you: "I would tend to trust my above statements that are based on hard facts from industry specialists more than some blokes opinion on the internet"
This is a forum to help the Ducati community - you are doing the opposite in my opinion - and I am always correct (ask Bradders)

Many will be happy to ignore the advice - but it does increase the change of burning your Ducati to the ground - what that chance is we do not know, but it is there lurking :)

I will not use one on a bike not designed for one in the first place.

    Thank You

  19. Prompted by this recent discussion, I decided to look at what Ducats fit to the Anniversary, R FE and SL all of which come with a LiPoFe and guess what ...... no different to the standard Panigale except the plastic cover has an extra hole in it and the cables are beefier. Go figure ! Andy
