1098r - New Project

Discussion in 'Builds & Projects' started by ditchvisitor, May 19, 2020.

  1. It’s been a while since I sold my old 1098S, I had a project thread on that so I thought I would start one for the new bike.

I’ve always hankered after a 1098R and finally managed to get my hands on one, thanks to Paul (@Mary Hinge ) of this forum, (who’s a top bloke btw!)

The bike was collected from an engine rebuild with new Pistals etc and delivered on Saturday as above but without the carbon wheels or swing arm and the plan is to restore it back to how it left the factory as it was supplied with all original fairings/carbon/tank etc which have been stored from new.

  4. Exhaust is now completely off and going to be polished again, I stuck in a £300 order for parts/fixings etc with MotoRapido and I’ve chased down on eBay some NOS original parts that were missing:
Left hand bar switches, standard gear linkage rod, number plate assembly/indicators, wing mirrors and ram air tubes. All parts I managed to sort at really decent prices which was nice!

  6. All the fairings/carbon are going to be detailed and PPF’d before going on the bike and once I’ve finished stripping off as much as I can it’s going up to Geoff at Baines to strip it down completely. The frame and wheels will then be stripped and repainted and the rebuild will commence! I’m off to Afghanistan (again) for 6 months in August so I’m hopefully I will get a cheeky ride in before then!

  7. Did it comes with all the fairings etc or you sourced them?

  8. Measuring complete and I’m optimistic that I can bit both the bike and the car in the garage when it returns from some work!!

  9. Came with everything, tank/fairings/nose/rear carbon tail piece, carbon belly pan and all the other carbon parts. They are all unmarked and as new having been stored since 2008!!

I’m pretty OCD so have stuck in a big order for bolts/fixings etc so make it as good as I can! I’ve got a build thread on my car on another forum and I tend to get carried away!!

money not spared in its maintenance that’s for sure.

re garage, get a bike mover and you can spin the bike against the wall flat :upyeah:

  12. I’ll watch this thread with huge interest. Have a word with MR. It might be an idea to have custom remap post rebuild. See what they say. They’re probably top boys in country on this subject and they won’t bs you. Wilf Moore did it last time and it was sooo sweet :):upyeah:
Glad it’s gone to a good home and I’m sure you’ll have as much fun with that bad boy as I did ;)

  13. Nice bike and project, the 1098R is the less sought after one off the R bikes over here.
But i think they are great looking.
And what car is that nice looking plaid seat for?

    Henk!!!

  14. Do they need doing or are you just being very fastidious? They look good in the photos, but then it's always hard to see the real detail in the pics.

  15. If you want it mint, they need doing :upyeah:

  17. There are some chips etc on the frame and it seems a shame considering that the bodywork is like new! If you want an idea of my OCD... https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&t=1705772&d=0#seperator

  18. Very nice. Very nice indeed. Made me all misty eyed and sad. Sold my 911 when we moved here, it's just not the car for around here and on these roads :(. Sorely missed.
